Alabama Woman Sentenced to Life in Prison for Killing Pregnant Mother of Five

A Birmingham, Alabama woman has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of capital murder in the death of another woman, a mother of five who was pregnant at the time of the attack.

According to Local 12 News, Aaniyah Nowden was found guilty in connection with the July 7, 2023 shooting death of Justina Wallace.

The two women were connected through a difficult circumstance: both were pregnant at the time by the same man, who was the father of Wallace’s young child as well as the father of the child Nowden was carrying.

The Day of the Shooting

According to testimony presented at trial, Wallace went to Nowden’s home on the day of the incident. A confrontation broke out involving Nowden and the man who had fathered children with both women, and the situation escalated quickly.

At the time of the shooting, Wallace was holding her young child. Authorities said two of her five children were nearby when the gun was fired. Wallace’s unborn baby did not survive.

Prosecutors introduced cellphone video at trial that captured part of the confrontation.

Prosecution and Verdict

Deputy District Attorney Jason Wilson told jurors that the defendant had shot and killed a pregnant woman who was holding nothing but her child.

Nowden’s defense argued self-defense during the trial. She had originally faced three counts of capital murder, but jurors dismissed two of those charges before reaching a final verdict.

A Jefferson County court sentenced Aaniyah Nowden to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
