He attempted to ignore the continuous alerts, yet their insistence suggested a matter of high importance. With palpable reluctance, he finally lifted the phone, his facial features growing taut as he reviewed the display. “Oh no! Mom!” he cried out, his voice sharp with mounting anxiety. He immediately stood up, rapidly initiating a call. I observed him, my heart accelerating, as he spoke directly to the emergency services, giving his mother’s residence details with unmistakable accuracy.

He bolted out the door without a moment’s hesitation. I stayed seated at the table, my thoughts wildly speculating on the events that had just occurred. A couple of hours passed before he reappeared, his face now smoothed with genuine relief.
