On May 21, Mykale Baker, an 18-year-old employee at the Dacula Burger King, noticed a busy late-night crowd and volunteered to take on an extra shift that evening. Earlier that day, Baker had celebrated his graduation from Mills Creek High School, still adorned in his graduation stole and medals. Without hesitation, he slipped on his plastic gloves and began preparing food orders behind the counter.
His unique appearance caught the attention of Maria Mendoza, a customer who was at the restaurant that night. Moved by Baker’s dedication, Mendoza recorded a brief TikTok video of him working. She admired how he chose to dive into his shift rather than spending the evening celebrating his graduation.
“While many graduates enjoyed the night with friends and family, Mykale Baker demonstrated what true determination looks like,” Mendoza shared on a GoFundMe page she created. “Fresh from receiving his diploma, still wearing his medals with pride, he showed up for his shift at Burger King.”
The heartfelt moment unfolded around 10 p.m. at the drive-thru window, shortly after Mendoza had attended her daughter’s graduation from the same high school in Hoschton, about 40 miles from Atlanta. Her 20-second video capturing their interaction spread rapidly online, amassing over 3 million views.
“He wasn’t seeking attention. He didn’t even know his story had gone viral,” Mendoza wrote. “Yet, thousands of people were inspired by his dedication, humility, and strong work ethic.”
Mendoza was particularly touched by Baker’s “radiating joy” and the way he carried himself with grace. This inspired her to launch a GoFundMe campaign to support his college dreams. The fundraiser gained momentum quickly, raising over $22,000, with every cent directed to Baker’s education.
“His quiet strength and dedication deeply moved me. I felt compelled to take action to honor him,” Mendoza told 11 Alive. “I’m grateful I had the chance to do something meaningful for him.”
On May 26, five days after the viral moment, Mendoza returned to the Dacula Burger King to share the incredible news with Baker. She surprised him with the total amount raised by nearly 1,000 strangers. A second TikTok video captured Baker’s emotional reaction as he hugged his mother and Mendoza, visibly touched by the outpouring of support.
In the video, Baker shared his uncertainties about the future. Financial challenges had made him doubt whether college was feasible, and he had considered taking a gap year. However, the donations opened new possibilities. “Thank you so much,” Baker said. “I was thinking of taking a break because I didn’t have money for school, but now, thanks to all of you, I might go straight to technical college to study mechanics.”
