A SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS THAT RESTORED OUR FAITH IN HUMANITY

Yesterday, Baby Gurl called her dad in tears—she had accidentally left her wallet on the bus. We were all upset, and she innocently asked if she might get it back. Not wanting to break her spirit, I gently explained that it was highly unlikely.

Later, when we arrived home, there was a knock at the door. A young man was standing there, which caused quite a bit of excitement among the little ones.

I opened the door and asked, “Can I help you?”

He replied, “I’m looking for AK.”

Naturally, I asked, “And who are you?”

He explained that he had found her wallet on the bus and wanted to return it. Everything was still inside—including the cash. He went on to say that something similar had happened to him just a few weeks ago, and he knew how terrible it felt to lose something so important.

My husband took some money out of his pocket and offered it to the young man as a thank-you. I couldn’t just let him leave, so we talked for a while longer. He touched my heart with his kindness, so I opened her wallet and gave him the $20 that was inside.

We learned that his name is Baxter, he’s 19 years old, attends school in New York, and—small world—he’s the son of a co-worker.

This simple act of kindness softened my heart and restored my faith in humanity. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Perkins, you should be very proud of your son. He is now an honorary member of our family.
